The Space Trilogy is a set of three books detailing the adventures of Dr. Ransom, on three planets, Malcandra (Mars), Perelandra (Venus), and finally, on Thulcandra (Earth). Lewis got the idea to write the trilogy when he and J.R.R. Tolkien decided that, since very few good science fiction books had been written, it was up to them to write a few. So Tolkien started writing a time travel story and Lewis wrote a space-travel story. Tolkien's time travel story didn't work out too well, but Lewis's Space Trilogy was a big success. The trilogy consists of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength. The books can be read in any order, but only Heaven knows why you'd want to.

Out of the Silent Planet

First in the celebrated Space Trilogy followed by Perelandra and That Hideous Strength.

In this first book of The Space Trilogy, our hero, Dr. Ransom, is kidnapped and brought to a different planet, called Malacandra (Mars). The two men who captured him, think that they are bringing him to Mars as a sacrifice to the local inhabitants, and when Dr. Ransom finds out about this, he escapes and starts to have marvelous adventures. That's all I'm going to tell you, otherwise I might ruin the story.

Perelandra

Second in the celebrated Space Trilogy that begins with Out of the Silent Planet and ends with That Hideous Strength.

In the second book of the Space Trilogy, Dr. Ransom is summoned to Perelandra (Venus) to avert disaster. The world, which was only just created, has only two intelligent, speaking inhabitants, a man and a woman (sort of like Adam and Eve, see?). But Satan, who has taken over the body of the evil physics professor who was also the bad guy in the last book, has come to Perelandra to tempt the woman. Sort of like in the Garden of Eden. Can you sort of tell where this is going? At any rate, Ransom has come to Perelandra to stop Satan from taking over the place. And it's NOT an easy task.

Last in the celebrated Space Trilogy, that begins with Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra.

This book, which is the end of the Space Trilogy takes place on Thulcandra (Earth). The best way to describe it is as "a compelling work of fiction that is also, at its heart, a timeless allegory of good and evil." Confusing, but accurate. Trust me . . .

The Screwtape Letters

The Screwtape Letters is a collection of letters between senior devil Screwtape and his "nephew" Wormwood that C.S. Lewis "received." The letters describe the art of and the methods involved in taking over a mortal's soul by constant temptation and small sins.
The copy of the book that I have, and that I recommend, is the Simon & Schuster paperback version, which also include "Screwtape Proposes a Toast," and is pictured below. If you're really lazy, you can buy the audio cassette version of this book which is read aloud by John Cleese and is pictured below.
